Uncertain. Could be from unattested *ζᾱτός, from the same root of δίζημαι (dízēmai, “I seek”), from Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂, *dyeh₂. See also ζῆλος (zêlos, “zeal”) and ζημία (zēmía, “damage, loss”).
