Traditionally derived from a Proto-Indo-European *gʰérsdʰo-, with cognates including Latin hordeum, Old High German gersta, but there are phonetic difficulties with this. Rather closer are Albanian drithë and Old Armenian գարի (gari), as if from a Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥yo-.
