From Proto-Indo-European *snḗh₁wr̥. Cognate with Latin nervus (English nerve), Sanskrit स्नावन् (snā́van, tendon, muscle, sinew), Old Armenian նեարդ (neard), and Avestan 𐬯𐬥𐬁𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆 (snāvarə).
