Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek ὀθόνη (othónē, sheet), probably from a Semitic language (compare Hebrew אֵטוּן (ʾēṭūn, fine linen)), ultimately from Egyptian jdmj (fine red linen).[1][2]
