From Proto-Iranian *wadʰúHh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wadʰúHs, from Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ-úHs, from Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ- (to bind, pledge, lead). Cognate of Sanskrit वधू (vadhū, bride, new wife, wife) and, more distantly, Old English weddian (pledge, wed).
