From Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁-. Cognates include Sanskrit पिपर्ति ‎(piparti, to fill) and Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬨𐬞𐬁𐬟𐬭𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 ‎(hampāfrāiti).
