Ancient Greek

Etymology

From πομφός (blister) + infix -λ- + ending υγ-ς. Possibly related to φλύζω[1] or the word ἡ πέμφιξ, τῆς πέμφῑγος “blast, breath, bubble”, with the ending similar to *-φλυξ as in οἰνόφλυξ (drunkard). [2]
