Metathesized from *τί-τκ-ω, reduplicated present stem from the Proto-Indo-European root *teḱ- ‎(beget, bring forth). Cognate with τέκνον ‎(téknon), τέκτων ‎(téktōn), τέχνη ‎(tékhnē), Latin texō, tignum.
