From Byzantine Greek τυρίν (turín, cheese), from Ancient Greek τυρίον (turíon); diminutive of τυρός (turós, cheese), from Proto-Hellenic *tūrós, from Proto-Indo-European *tuh₂-ró-s, from *tewh₂- (to swell). Cognate with Mariupol Greek тыри́ (tyrí).
