Learnedly from υδατο- (ydato-) +‎ Ancient Greek στέγ(ω) (stég(ō)) +‎ -ής (-ís) as a calque of English waterproof, or a misspelling of Koine Greek ὑδασιστεγής (hudasistegḗs, waterproof).[1]
