Ancient Greek

Etymology

The word has been compared with Latvian gaišs (light, bright) and reconstructed as *gʷʰaiso- (bright, shining). Other reconstructions which have been proposed are *φαιϝός (*phaiwós) and *φαισϝός (*phaiswós). In short, the etymology is still unknown.
