Ancient Greek

Etymology

From φέρβω (phérbō, to feed) +‎ (, abstract noun suffix). The first element is of uncertain origin; Pokorny suggests Proto-Indo-European *gʰreh₁- (to grow (of plants)), Beekes calls it an agrarian loan from a substrate.
