From unattested diminutive form *χαμομήλιον of the Medieval Byzantine Greek χαμόμηλ(ον) (khamómēl(on)) + -ιον (-ion), from Koine Greek χαμαίμηλον (khamaímēlon), from χαμαί (khamaí, on the ground) (> χάμ(ω) (chám(o)) + -ο- (-o-) > χαμο- (chamo-) + μῆλον (mêlon, fruit, apple).[1]
