Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéyōm. Cognate with χεῖμα (kheîma, “snow”) and χειμών (kheimṓn, “winter”), Latin hiems, Welsh gaeaf, Sanskrit हिम (himá), Hittite 𒄀𒈠𒀭 (gimax), Armenian ձմեռ (jmeṙ), Proto-Slavic *zima.
