[edit]From Old East Slavic Китаи (Kitai), from a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic Qïtaǰ (“Khitan”), from Khitan 𘱿𘱤 (*qid i) or 𘱿𘲫 (*qid ún, “Khitan”), the Mongolic people who ruled Manchuria, then Northern China, then Central Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries.
Cognate with Kazakh Қытай (Qytai), Kyrgyz Кытай (Kıtay), Karachay-Balkar Къытай (Qıtay), Uzbek Xitoy, Turkmen Hytaý (“China”) and Chinese 契丹 (Qìdān), English Cathay, etc.
