Etymology
From Old East Slavic Китай (Kitaj), from a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic Qïtaǰ (“Khitan”), from Khitan [Term?] Khita(n), the Mongolic people who ruled Manchuria, then Northern China, then Central Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries. Cognate with Kazakh Қытай (Qytai), Kyrgyz Кытай (Kıtay), Karachay-Balkar Къытай (Qïtay), Uzbek Xitoy, Turkmen Hytaý (“China”) and Chinese 契丹 (Qìdān), English Cathay, &c.
