From Шпанберг (Španberg) +‎ (-a), from Martin Spanberg, a Danish naval officer who served as one of Vitus Bering's lieutenants in the early Russian exploration of the Pacific Ocean. The suffix provides agreement with an implicit остров (ostrov, island).
