[edit]Inherited from Old Ruthenian оборонѧти (oboronjati).[1] By surface analysis, абарані́ць (abaranícʹ) + -яць (-jacʹ). Cognate with Russian обороня́ть (oboronjátʹ) and Ukrainian обороня́ти (oboronjáty).
