Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian оборонѧти (oboronjati). By surface analysis, абарані́ць (abaranícʹ) +‎ -яць (-jacʹ). Cognate with Russian обороня́ть (oboronjátʹ) and Ukrainian обороня́ти (oboronjáty).
