Etymology[edit]

Internationalism, likely borrowed from German Adsorption, first coined c. 1882. Compare English adsorption of the same origin.

At any rate, ultimately from the Latin roots Latin ad- (to, towards) +‎ Latin sorbeō (drink up) +‎ Latin -tiō (noun-forming suffix), literally drinking-up/sucking-in towards.
