From Proto-Mongolic *haluka. Compare Proto-Turkic *balka (hammer), Proto-Tungusic *palụka (hammer).

Compare with Daur xallugw, Kazakh балға (balğa), Nanai палоа (paloa), Sanskrit परशु (paraśu, axe), Ancient Greek πέλεκυς (pélekus, axe), Russian палка (palka).
