Compare Буряадай (Burjaadaj), name of the legendary ancestor of the tribe. Can be regarded as its stem буряа- with plural -д (-d). See also related Khamnigan Mongol буряад (burjaad), Mongolian буриад (buriad), Kalmyk бурад (burad), Khakas пыраат (pıraat).

Attested in the Secret History of the Mongols as 不舌᠋里牙_惕᠌ (Burijad). ​​
