Etymology

From Proto-Mongolic *gar, commonly connected with Proto-Turkic *kar, *karɨ (forearm) or Proto-Tungusic *gara (branch, bough).

Compare Dongxiang kha, Daur gary, Kazakh қар (qar), Tuvan кыры (kırı, ulna), Evenki гара (gara), Manchu ᡤᠠᡵᡤᠠᠨ (gargan).
