From Proto-Slavic *glodati; cognate with Ukrainian глода́ти (hlodáty), Bulgarian гло́жда (glóžda), Serbo-Croatian гло̀дати, Slovene glódati, Czech hlodat, Polish głodać, Upper Sorbian hłodać, Lower Sorbian głodaś (to scratch). More distantly cognate with Old Norse glata (to destroy).
