Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *gǫba. Cognate with Slovene goba, Slovak huba, Serbo-Croatian губа/guba, Russian губка ‎(gubka). Non-Slavic cognates include Pashto غومبه ‎(γumba, swelling). Compare Latin fungus, Ancient Greek σπόγγος ‎(spóngos).
