Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic дѣꙗти (dějati), from Proto-Slavic *dějati, an extension of Proto-Slavic *děti (to do, to say) (whence деть (detʹ)). Cognate with Belarusian дзе́яць (dzjéjacʹ).
