From Common Turkic *yemiš (fruit), from Proto-Turkic *yẹ̄miĺč (fruit).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (jemiš, fruit)[1]; Tatar җимеш (cimeş), Kyrgyz жемиш (jemiş), Kazakh жеміс (jemıs), Khakas ниміс (nimìs), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Azerbaijani, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Crimean Tatar, Turkish yemiş, Chuvash ҫимӗҫ (śimĕś, fruit).
