From Proto-Slavic *koba, an alternative form of Proto-Slavic *kobь, whence Old Church Slavonic кобь (kobĭ, destiny).

BER further relates it with dialectal кобе́ц (kobéc, sparrowhawk), presumingly of expressive origin.
