From Proto-Slavic *korsta. Cognate with Ukrainian коро́ста (korósta, scabies), Old Church Slavonic краста (krasta, scabies), Bulgarian кра́ста (krásta, scabs), Serbo-Croatian кра̏ста (scabs), Slovene krásta (scabies), Old Czech krásta (smallpox), Polish krosta (smallpox). More distantly cognate with Lithuanian kar̃šti (to comb (wool or linen)) (1sg. karšiù, 1sg. past karšiaũ), Latvian kā̀rst (to comb (wool or linen)) (1sg. kā̀ršu, 1sg. past kā̀rsu), Sanskrit कषति (káṣati, to scrape, scratch), Latin carrō (to scratch, to comb (wool)), German harsch (rough, hard).
