- per Trubachyov and Melnychuk, from the o-grade of Proto-Indo-European *kes- (“to scrape, comb”) + -tr-.
- per Skok and others - from Romanian custură (“blade, knife edge”).
- per Mladenov and others - from кост (kost, “bone”).
