From Proto-Samic *kërës, from Proto-Finno-Permic *kirɜ.

Related to Finnish kireä (tight; tense), Erzya and Moksha киремс (kiŕems), compare Northern Sami garas, Skolt Sami kõõrâs and Kildin Sami кэ̄рас (kēras).
