Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic лакати (lakati), from Proto-Slavic *lokati. Cognate with Lithuanian làkti (to lap), Sanskrit लाकयति (lākayati).

  1. to lap (to take liquid into the mouth with the tongue)
  2. (colloquial) to drink greedily or in large amounts (usually alcohol)
