Noun

[edit]

лесть (lestʹf inan (genitive ле́сти, nominative plural ле́сти, genitive plural ле́стей)

  1. flattery, adulation, cajolery
    • 1906, Александр Куприн [Aleksandr I. Kuprin], “3”, in Штабс-капитан Рыбников; English translation from John Middleton Murry, transl., Captain Ribnikov, 1916:
      Убеди́вшись, что лесть ему́ не помога́ла, он тепе́рь про́бовал довести́ штабс-капита́на до открове́нности, дразня́ и возбужда́я его́ патриоти́ческие чу́вства.
Ubedívšisʹ, što lestʹ jemú ne pomogála, on tepérʹ próboval dovestí štabs-kapitána do otkrovénnosti, draznjá i vozbuždája jevó patriotíčeskije čúvstva.
Convinced that flattery had been of no avail, he now tried to draw the captain to frankness, by teasing and rousing his feelings of patriotism.
