Russian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Blend of либера́л (liberál, liberal) +‎ педера́ст (pederást, pedɛrást, pederast). Used when expressing aversion to neoliberalism and/or homosexuality.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

либера́ст (liberástm anim (genitive либера́ста, nominative plural либера́сты, genitive plural либера́стов, feminine либера́стка)

  1. (slang, politics, derogatory) libtard, liberal

Usage notes[edit]

The term is often used by political bloggers and other politically active citizens in Russia and other post-Soviet countries with strong anti-western sentiment as a pejorative against supporters of western liberal democracy, free-market capitalism, and social liberalism. It is a contraction of the word "liberal" and "pederast", as among right-wing Russians pederasty is considered virtually synonymous with homosexuality, the latter of which liberals generally defend.
