Borrowed from Sanskrit मन्त्र (mantra, literally instrument of thought), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *mántram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mántram, from Proto-Indo-European *mén-tro-m, from *men- (to think) + *-trom (instrumental noun suffix).
