From Proto-Mari *mü, borrowed from Proto-Udmurt, ultimately from Proto-Permic *må, from Proto-Uralic *mete. Compare Udmurt му (mu) and Komi-Zyrian ма (ma). Cognates include Eastern Mari мӱй (müj).
