Etymology

From Old East Slavic отъкрꙑти (otŭkryti, to uncover, unfold; to reveal, disclose), from Proto-Slavic *otъkryti, from *otъ- +‎ *kryti (to cover, hide). Equivalent to от- (ot-) +‎ крыть (krytʹ).

Sense "to discover" is calque of French découvrir or German entdecken.
