From Old East Slavic пядь (pjadĭ), from Proto-Slavic *pędь. Cognate to Ukrainian п'ядь (pʺjadʹ), Old Church Slavonic пѧдь (pędĭ), Czech píď, Slovak piaď, Polish piędź, Upper Sorbian pjedź, Lower Sorbian pěź, Serbo-Croatian pȇd, Slovene ре̣̑d. Related to пнуть (pnutʹ).
