Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *orvьnъ. Cognate with Belarusian ро́ўны (róŭny). Doublet of ра́вный (rávnyj), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.

  • A special short masculine singular form is found in the expression не ровён ча́с (ne rovjón čás, God forbid, you never know, literally the hour is not even).
