From Old East Slavic сѣмиꙗ (sěmija, family, household; husband, wife) (whence also Ukrainian сім'я́ (simʺjá) and Belarusian сям'я́ (sjamʺjá)), from Proto-Slavic *sěmьja. Compare Lithuanian šeimà (family), Latvian sàimе (family, household), Old Prussian seimīns, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌼𐍃 (haims, settlement), Old High German heim (home) and thereby English home, Ancient Greek κώμη (kṓmē, settlement).
