From Old East Slavic сѣмиꙗ ‎(sěmija, family, household; husband, wife) (whence also Ukrainian сім'я́ ‎(simʺjá) and Belarusian сям'я́ ‎(sjamʺjá)), from Proto-Slavic *sěmьja. Compare Lithuanian šeima ‎(family), Latvian sàimе ‎(family, household), Old Prussian seimīns, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌼𐍃 ‎(haims, settlement), Old High German heim ‎(home), Ancient Greek κώμη ‎(kṓmē, settlement).
