From Old East Slavic съвѣтъ ‎(sŭvětŭ), borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съвѣтъ ‎(sŭvětŭ, advice), compounded from со- ‎(so-) + вѣтъ ‎(větŭ, agreement), from Proto-Slavic *větъ ‎(council, talk). Probably cognate with Polish witać ‎(to welcome).
