Mongolian

Etymology

From Middle Mongol ᠰᠣᠭᠣᠩᠭᠢᠨ ᠠ (soɣonggin-a). A loanword from Proto-Turkic *sogan (“onion”) augmented with a suffix resembling Middle Mongol ᠭᠠᠨᠠ (-ɣana), ᠭᠡᠨᠡ (-gene) used in names of plants.[1][2]

Compare also Old Turkic 𐰣𐰍𐰽 (soɣun), Turkish soğan, Chuvash сухан (suh̬an) and Bashkir һуған (huğan).
