Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic страньнъ (stranĭnŭ, “foreign”). Derived from Old Church Slavonic страна (strana, “country”) (whence Russian страна́ (straná)). Sense development "country" → "foreign country" → "foreign" → "strange, odd". Synchronically analyzable as страна́ (straná) + -ный (-nyj).
