From Proto-Slavic *sъpati, from Indo-European *sup-a-ti, which is derived from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *swep- (sleep).

The Proto-Indo-European root also led to Old English swefn, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos), Latin somnus, Old Irish súan.
