From Proto-Permic [Term?], ultimately borrowed from a Turkic language, from Proto-Turkic *čarlag (compare Chuvash ҫурла (śurla)). Cognates include Eastern Mari сорла (sorla) and Hungarian sarló.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian чарла (ćarla) and Komi-Permyak чарла (ćarla).
