Bulgarian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Unclear. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian та̀љиге pl, Slovene tolíga, Czech taliha within Slavic and Hungarian taliga, Turkish talika in other languages.
- Native derivation presumes origin from obsolete Proto-Slavic *tel- / *tol- / *tal- (“to bear, to undergo”) + -ига (-iga), from the same root as Bulgarian теле́ (telé, “calf”), Lithuanian tiltas (“bridge”). In that case, Hungarian, Romanian and Turkish cognates would be Slavic borrowings.
- Borrowed from Turkic (or possibly Mongolian), cognate with the Turkish term. Also attested as Old Church Slavonic телѣга (telěga), Russian теле́га (teléga), Romanian teleagă with root -е-.
