Etymology
From Proto-Mongolic *temexen, a borrowing from Proto-Turkic *debe.
Compare Mongghul Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "mjg" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E., Turkish deve.
The sense 'bishop' is unique to Mongolian (and Kalmyk), and probably represents an adaptation of the Persian version where the bishop is called 'elephant'.
