From Middle Mongol ᠬᠥᠬᠦᠨ (kökün), from Proto-Mongolic *kökön (“breast, nipple”).

Somehow related to Proto-Turkic *kögüz / *kögüŕ (“chest”). Compare Turkish göğüs, Kyrgyz көкүрөк (kökürök) and Chuvash кӑкӑр (kăk̬ăr).
