Черепаха

Etymology

From че́реп (čérep, “skull, crust”), the earlier term желвь (želvʹ) from Old East Slavic желꙑ (žely) was discontinued. According to the Etymological Dictionary of the Russian Language, черепаха came into use very likely as taboo avoidance of желвь.

Cognate with Belarusian чарапа́ха (čarapáxa), Ukrainian черепа́ха (čerepáxa).

Compare typologically Latin testūdō (akin to testa). Also compare Bulgarian костену́рка (kostenúrka) (akin to кость (kostʹ)).
