From Proto-Mordvinic *čəča-~*čuča-, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćo(n)ča. Cognates include Moksha шичав (šičav), Finnish sonsar, sonsari, Veps sonzaŕ, Livonian sīezõr, Eastern Mari шуршо (šuršo).
