Etymology[edit]

From Old East Slavic сьрсть (sĭrstĭ), (since XIV) шьрсть (šĭrstĭ), from Proto-Slavic *sьrstь, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱer(s)- (rough hair, bristle) + *-tь, whence also Lithuanian šerys, English hair.
